For the second-straight year, Division I Bucknell ended the Mercyhurst men's water polo season in the Southern Division Championships with a sixth-place finish. On Saturday in Annapolis, Md., the 17th-ranked Bisons edged the Lakers 15-7.
Mercyhurst (14-9) received three goals from junior Alex Perry and two from junior Andrew Schonhoff. But after falling behind 4-2 after the first and 8-4 at the half, the Lakers could not recover. Bucknell went on to defeat Princeton to advance to the Eastern Championship.
Oscar Calderon and Jake Coin also chipped in goals, and Calderon recorded two assists, two steals and two drawn ejections. Ryan Holt added two assists and three steals.
The Lakers finish their season with a school-record 14 victories won a share of the CWPA Southern Conference Western Division title for the second year in a row, as well.
In the last two years, the Lakers have totaled 26 victories, which is 10 more than the program had totaled in its first five years of existence.
Saturday's game was the last in the careers of three Mercyhurst seniors--Kyle Bogucki, Ashton Farrell and Kevin Riordan. Bogucki played three seasons at goalkeeper and moved into the field this year and totaled eight goals and seven assist. Farrell scored 17 goals on the season, as well.
Riordan finishes his career as the school's leader in assists and points and ranks second in career goals. In 2007, he ranked first on the team in assists and third in scoring.
