Mercyhurst and Sacred Heart Battle to 2-2 Overtime Tie

Nov. 24, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst and Sacred Heart skated to a 2-2 overtime tie Saturday night before over 420 fans at the Ice Center. The Lakers are 2-10-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Atlantic Hockey while the Pioneers are 4-5-2 and 4-1-2, respectively.

Unlike the previous evening, Sacred Heart got on the board first when Bear Trapp scored on a rebound past junior netminder Matt Lundin. Mercyhurst's Brett Robinson tied the contest with just 20 seconds left in the period. The goal was assisted by Nick Vandenbeld and Steve Cameron.

The Lakers took their first lead of the contest as Kirk Medernach notched his first goal of the season three and a half minutes into the final period, assisted by Brandon Coccimiglio.

The Pioneers stormed right back four minutes later as Alexandre Parent scored on a Mercyhurst delayed penalty. With goaltender Stefan Drew on the bench in lieu of the extra attacker, SHU knotted the game at two apiece.

Mercyhurst held a 3-2 shot advantage in overtime, but could not score. The Lakers' biggest chance of the night came with under 20 seconds left in the extra session as Medernach shot the puck, which was redirected in front, hit the far post and was sitting in the crease, but no one could push it into the net.

SHU outshot Mercyhurst 32-30. Both teams struggled on the power play as Mercyhurst was 0-for-8 and Sacred Heart was 0-for-6.

The Lakers will battle Canisius in a home-and-home series beginning Friday, Nov. 30, in Buffalo at 7:05 p.m. The Lakers and Griffs play in Erie on Dec. 1 at 7:05 p.m. That date marks the first of seven straight home games for Mercyhurst.
