The Mercyhurst men's hockey team (2-10-1 overall, 2-4-1 Atlantic Hockey) led, 2-1, after two periods, but could not hold on as the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers (4-5-1, 4-1-1) rallied to defeat the Lakers, 3-2 in overtime, at the Ice Center. The loss was the Lakers' seventh straight to SHU.

Ironically, Mercyhurst never trailed in the contest until the final score. Freshman Brandon Coccimiglio started things off with a power-play goal at 12:22 of the first period with assists by sophomores Matt Fennell and Cullen Eddy. The Pioneers tied the game with just 35 seconds left in the opening stanza as Bear Trapp scored on the power play.

The Lakers had their second lead of the contest as freshman Steve Cameron scored his second goal of his collegiate career on a breakaway. SHU's Adam DeJong scored the only goal of the third period, just three minutes into the stanza and two seconds after a Mercyhurst penalty had expired.

Sacred Heart's lone shot on goal in the extra period proved to be the game winner. Eric Giosa's shot from the blue line acted more like a pinball, but it got the job done for the Pioneers as it beat junior Matt Lundin.

Sacred Heart outshot Mercyhurst, 39-33. Lundin made 36 saves in the loss, including several point-blank shots, while SHU's Stefan Drew stopped 31 shots.

Both teams struggled with the man advantage as Mercyhurst finished 1-for-8 and Sacred Heart was 1-for-5.

The same teams will meet tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Once again, all youth hockey members and parents will get into the game without charge by wearing some of their hockey garb. Selected youth hockey players will also accompany Mercyhurst's starters to the blue line during player introductions. Also, any fan bringing a used coat or non-perishable canned food items will also be admitted free. All donations will be turned over to Mercyhurst College Campus Ministry for distribution to the area's needy.
