Princeton, N.J. -
Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta scored twice and junior netminder Courtney Drennen made 19 saves as No. 7 Mercyhurst got back on the winning track with a hard-fought 3-1 win at Princeton. The Lakers improved to 9-2-2 overall while the Tigers dropped to 4-5-2.
After a scoreless first period, one in which the Lakers outshot the Tigers 13-7, senior captain Stephanie Jones put Mercyhurst ahead when she tallied her fifth goal of the year, on a power play, at 7:28 of the second period. Juniors Melissa Dianoski and Valerie Chouinard assisted. Dianoski snapped an eight-game point drought with the helper while Chouinard stretched her scoring streak to six games. Agosta cashed her 13th of the year four minutes later with help from freshman winger Jesse Scanzano and senior defender Danielle Ayearst. Agosta's goal gave her a seven-game scoring streak. Scanzano now has posted at least one point in four straight contests while Ayearst registered her first point since October 13 in a 4-1 win over visiting Boston University. Mercyhurst outshot Princeton 14-6 in the middle frame.
Agosta's 14th of the season stretched the lead to 3-0 at 4:32 of the third. Agosta was helped by senior forward Sherilyn Fraser, whose point was her first of the season.
The Tigers avoided a shutout just 14 seconds later when junior forward Christine Foster knocked home her third of the year to conclude the scoring. Mercyhurst owned a slight 9-7 advantage in third period shots and a 36-20 margin overall.
Both teams were whistled for four minor penalties in the two-hour affair. The Lakers had the game's lone power play marker.
Agosta's two goals give her 99 career points.
The win was Mercyhurst's third straight against the Tigers and squared the all-time series at 7-7-1. Drennen picked up her fourth win of the year in as many decisions and is now 18-0-2 lifetime.
The two teams will conclude the weekend set Saturday at 3:00.
