Lakers Fall 3-2 in Overtime to Gannon in the GLIAC Semi-finals

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss in overtime to Gannon on Thursday in the GLIAC semi-finals. The Lakers fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at two to send it into overtime before giving up the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of play. Mercyhurst is now 7-10-3 this year and 5-4-1 in conference play. Gannon is 15-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the GLIAC.

In the first half, Gannon scored the first match of the game in the 35th minute when All-GLIAC Second-Team honoree Dan Howell scored his ninth goal of the season.Less than three minutes into the second half, Howell tallied his second goal of the match to give Gannon the 2-0 advantage.

Reluctant to give in, Mercyhurst turned up the offense and at the 67th minute, freshman All-GLIAC First-Team member Billy Colton put a goal on the scoreboard for the Lakers. The game continued on until there was 15 seconds of regulation when Mercyhurst earned a golden opportunity.

For the tying goal, Gannon was called for a foul about 40 yards out. Mercyhurst pushed everyone up into the box and junior goalkeeper Daniel Mudd came up to take the free kick. He placed the ball in the center of the goal mouth where Gannon's goalkeeper was able to get a deflection. Luckily for the Lakers, junior Robbie Kennerney was waiting and put the loose ball into the lower left corner of the goal to tie it at 2-2.

In overtime, Gannon's Geneo Oberst stole a pass in Mercyhurst's defensive part of the field leaving him alone with no opposition but the goalie. He slid the shot past a diving Mudd for to give Gannon the 3-2 decision over the Lakers.

Mercyhurst has now closed out its fall 2007 season.
