Erie, Pa. - The third-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team led 4-1 after the first period and never looked back as the Lakers defeated CHA foe Robert Morris Tuesday night before 400 fans at the MIC. Mercyhurst improved to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference while the Colonials dropped to 1-6-1 and 0-2-0, respectively. Both conference wins have come against RMU.

Mercyhurst opened the scoring with a 3-0 lead on goals from Hayley McMeekin (pp), Jesse Scanzano and Ashley Cockell. The Colonials scored their first goal against the Lakers this season as Alissa Dorman beat junior netminder Courtney Drennen on a five-on-three power-play opportunity. MC regained the three-goal lead as McMeekin scored with the man advantage.

Mercyhurst scored once in each of the second and third periods by Meghan Agosta to finish the scoring, with the latter coming on the power play.

Mercyhurst outshot the Colonials, 46-14, including a 15-2 advantage in the middle stanza. Drennen made 13 saves while Brianne McLaughlin, who started in net for RMU, made 38 saves in over 51 minutes and Daneca Butterfield stopped two shots in eight minutes.

After the game, the teams had a shootout, which is new this year and will occur after every league contest. Drennen and Butterfield kept the shooters scoreless before Ashley Cockell beat Butterfield in the fifth round with a shot just underneath the upper-right corner post.

The Laker power play unit remained potent as MC was 3-for-5 with the man advantage while Robert Morris was 1-for-4. Mercyhurst has the second-best power play in Division I (31.5), just one-tenth behind Dartmouth (31.6).

The Lakers will get the weekend off before starting a six-game road trip, with stops at Clarkson (11/16-17), Princeton (11/23-24) and Niagara (12/1-2) before returning home to face No. 2 New Hampshire on Dec. 7-8 at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
