Nisbet Sets Career Ace Record as Lakers Weather Storm

Erie, Pa. - With the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team holding an 8-6 lead in the third game of Wednesday's non-conference match against Lake Erie, senior Christine Nisbet tallied the 130th service ace of her career, moving her into first place in the Mercyhurst record books and helping the Lakers to a 3-0 victory over the Storm.

Nisbet, who also totaled eight kills, finished the match with two aces, moving ahead of Lyndsi Hughes as the career leader. Hughes played from 2001-04 and set the mark at 129.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 16-12 overall, ensuring their first winning season since the 2003 squad went 16-15. Mercyhurst also improved their non-conference record to 11-1 this year. The team is also 10-0 at home against non-conference opponents.

The Lakers took game one 30-19, held off Lake Erie by a 30-27 score in game two and quickly notched a 30-18 win in the clincher. Lake Erie falls to 9-20 overall.

Freshman Erin English led the Lakers with a career-high 12 kills. Fellow freshman Justine Smith chipped in seven. Sophomore Julia Butler totaled a match-high 36 assists.

On the other side, Lake Erie's assist leader managed only seven and the team totaled just 28 kills to Mercyhurst's 52. Mercyhurst also recorded 10 service aces. Freshman Katie Fritz led the way with three.

The Lakers return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday at nationally ranked Hillsdale. The road trip continues on Saturday at Wayne State.
