No. 1 Mercyhurst Forced To Settle For Tie With UConn

Jan. 19, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - Connecticut goalie Brittany Wilson stopped 10 overtime shots as the unranked UConn Huskies forced a 3-3 tie with the No. 1 Mercyhurst Lakers women's hockey team Friday.

Mercyhurst held a 49-24 advantage in shots on goal and jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one period on goals from Meghan Agosta and Valerie Chouinard. Amy Hollstein's first period goal was sandwiched between the two Mercyhurst goals.

In the second period, Natalie Payne tallied the only goal of the period to give Mercyhurst a 3-1 lead after two periods.

UConn battled back in a gritty third period as Jaclyn Hawkins scored twice, the final goal coming with less than four minutes to play, to send the contest to overtime.

Mercyhurst dominated the overtime, frantically looking for the game winner, holding a 10-1 shots on goal advantage. Payne almost scored in overtime, driving a shot off the inside of the post but never crossing the goal line.

The tie snaps a 10 game winning streak for the Lakers. The last non-win came in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of then-No. 5 St. Lawrence on November 18. Since that time, Mercyhurst had outscored opponents 44-10 and took over the No. 1 ranking in the country for the first time in program history.

Mercyhurst will look to rebound Saturday when the Lakers host UConn again at 1 p.m.
