The Mercyhurst women's tennis team had little trouble with Allegheny Tuesday, defeating the Gators 7-2 in non-conference action. The Lakers won the top five singles matches in fairly easy fashion after taking two of three doubles matches.
Without No. 1 player Jennifer Daly in the singles lineup, the Lakers still had plenty to get past Allegheny. Christine Mersch and Meghan Raynor won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and Jaclyn McLean and Elizabeth Mullane won 8-2 at No. 3 heading into singles play.
Playing her second consecutive match at No. 1, Jamie Sutyak rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Raynor completed her day with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win. Mullane won easily 6-0, 6-2 and Downing cruised 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and No. 4. Finally, McLean dominated at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-2.
Mercyhurst improves to 4-2 on the year heading into a stretch of six crucial GLIAC matches. The Lakers open at Ferris State Friday at 2 p.m. before playing at Grand Valley State Saturday at 10 a.m.
