The Mercyhurst volleyball team opened its season with two come-from-behind victories Friday, defeating Shippensburg and Shepherd at the Shepherd Tournament. The Lakers lost the opening game against Shippensburg before winning 21-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-27. In the second match of the day, Mercyhurst again lost the first game before taking over in a 31-33, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27 win over Shepherd.
Mercyhurst Defeats Shippensburg 21-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-27
The Merychurst volleyball team took a solid first step, opening its season with a 21-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-27 win over Shippensburg Friday at the Shepherd Tournament. After dropping the opening game to the Raiders, the Lakers came up with critical points in each of the final three games.
Mercyhurst's balance was evident in the match as junior Kristin Peterson and sophomores Jenna Matson and Lauren Kubinski led the attack offensively. Peterson and Matson ended with 14 kills apiece and Kubinski ended with 13. Matson also had a team-high 16 digs and Kubinski added four blocks. Senior Cara Nelson had 15 digs and freshman Teri Rhodes had a team-best three aces.
Mercyhurst Defeats Shepherd 31-33, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27
The Lakers bounced back from a tough loss in the opening game to beat the host team in the second match. Mercyhurst's defense was strong in the comeback effort.
Christine Nisbet paced Mercyhurst with seven blocks and added three aces, while Kubinski added six blocks to go with her eight kills. Peterson had 19 digs and nine kills, while Nelson posted 17 digs. Matson led the team in kills for the second consecutive match with 12.
Mercyhurst will continue play Saturday in the Shepherd Tournament. The Lakers will play Wilmington (DE) at 1 p.m. and Millersville at 5 p.m.
