Mercyhurst Tops Washington & Jefferson, 7-4

North East, Pa. - Mercyhurst won its third Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) match of the weekend Sunday as it defeated Washington & Jefferson 7-4 at the Mercyhurst North East Aquatic Center. The Lakers improved to 12-7-1 overall and 4-2 in the CWPA.

The Presidents outscored Mercyhurst 3-1 in the first quarter before the Lakers returned the favor in the second for a 4-4 stalemate at intermission. Mercyhurst then blanked W & J in the second half while posting a pair of goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth.

Carrie Willison, Cassie Rand and Christine Somera paced the offense with two goals apiece while goaltender Gina Mieras made 15 saves.

The Lakers will get a forfeit from Penn State Behrend Wednesday as the Lions were forced to suspend the rest of their season due to injuries. Mercyhurst won't compete again until the Western Division Championships April 22 and 23 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
