INDIANA, Pa. -
Jamie Walczak led off with his second homer of the year and Mercyhurst (32-11) never looked back, taking a 10-3 decision from Indiana (Pa.) (10-37) in rain-shortened, non-conference matchup. The win extended the Lakers win streak to 15 games.
Due to heavy rains, game one was called after the bottom of the sixth and game two was cancelled.
Walczak led off the game with a long ball and Walter Wieczorek added a two-run double as part of a three run first inning. David Lough, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a base hit in the inning, scored on the Wieczorek double.
IUP cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, but an RBI single by Scott Monzel plated Lough and made it 4-2 after three innings.
Mercyhurst then added two-run innings in each of the final three frames before the game was finally called. In the fourth, Lough and Luli stroked back-to-back RBI singles. Bases loaded walks to Walczak and Joe Mariano brought home runs in the fifth and Lough added a two-run base knock in the sixth.
Brian Espersen started on the hill for Mercyhurst and pitched the first five innings. He struck out eight and scattered four hits and four walks. He allowed two runs, one earned, and improved to 5-1.
Ryan Schreiber relieved him to start the sixth and allowed the final IUP run.
Lough had another big game, going 4-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs and a double. Walczak went 3-for-4, as did Wieczorek. Luli finished 2-for-4.
Chase McNutt took the loss for Indiana (Pa.) and fell to 0-4. He allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits. Dan Snyder worked two innings and allowed four runs on sevens hits, as well. Adam Hemminger finished the game by surrendering the final two runs on one hit and four walks.
Andrew Andryka went 2-for-3 to lead IUP. Sean Foor scored twice.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Saturday & Sunday, April 29 & 30 with doubleheaders at No. 7 Grand Valley.
