Mercyhurst and Wheeling Jesuit Divide a Doubleheader

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst and Wheeling Jesuit split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Lakers' softball field. Kim Griffin and Katie Clark held the Cardinals to four hits in the opener while Griffin and Melissa Rizzo drove in two runs apiece in a 6-1 decision. The Cardinals' Jenna Clapham, who pitched both games, did an about-face in the nightcap and limited the Lakers to four singles as WJU prevailed 3-0. Mercyhurst, with conference doubleheaders against Northwood, Lake Superior State, and Saginaw Valley State set for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, ended the twinbill at 14-23 overall. The Cardinals left Erie 14-24.

Mercyhurst scored single runs in the first and second innings of the first game and plated two in both the third and fourth. Griffin singled in an unearned run in the first and Dana Moderick tripled home Anne Styn in the second for a 2-0 lead. Jen Feret had an RBI double in the third and eventually scored the Lakers' fourth run on an infield grounder. Rizzo ended the Mercyhurst attack in the fourth with a two-run homer, her third of the year. The Cardinals' only run came in the fifth when Shawna Clark touched Griffin for a round-tripper.

The Cardinals'snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of the second game when they bunched three singles against Feret. Wheeling Jesuit then put the game away in the sixth when Clark hit her second homer of the afternoon with a runner on.

Feret worked five-plus innings and allowed all three runs and six hits. Clark allowed just one hit in recording the last six outs. Kate Conochan joined Rizzo, Feret, and Moderick with second-game singles.
