Mercyhurst snapped a 2-2 tie with five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Shepherd University 7-2 before dropping a 5-3 verdict to West Virginia Wesleyan in the final day of the Salem, Va. Softball Invitational. The Lakers left Virginia with a 9-14 overall mark.
Junior Melissa Rizzo led a 9-hit attack in the first game with two hits including a double. Freshman Brittany Strier pitched the final three innings in relief to pick up the win.
Wesleyan crossed the plate three times in the fourth inning of the second game to snap a 2-2 tie. Freshman Jennifer Popinski had three of the Lakers' seven hits. Senior Jen Feret was the losing pitcher.
Mercyhurst will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Tuesday, April 4, with a twinbill at Gannon.
