Mercyhurst (19-6, 9-6 GLIAC South) got 21 points from Avi Fogel, but Findlay (21-3, 13-2 GLIAC South) captured a 60-47 decision at the MAC.
Fogel played all 40 minutes, including the entire first half when he scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. For the game, the only Laker in double figures hit 8-of-17 shots, but was only 1-of-6 from three-point range.
A Tyler Niekamp layup with 9:08 left in the half gave the Oilers a 21-12 lead, their largest of the half. The Lakers battled back and captured a 24-23 lead after a Fogel lay in with 1:03 to play. Then, with 29 seconds left Andy Kubinski stole the ball and Fogel finished the break to cap a 13-3 run and make it 26-23. A pair of Frank Phillips free throws cut the lead to 26-25 at the break.
A lay up by Richard Field gave Mercyhurst a 33-30 advantage with 17:22 to play. From that point the Oilers went on a 27-8 run that turned the score to 57-41 in favor of Findlay with 2:28 to play. Dustin Pfeifer and Frank Phillips combined to score 21 points during the run.
Phillips scored 22 to lead all players. The forward shot 5-of-10 from the field and hit 11-of-16 free throws. Pfeifer added 15, but hit just 3-of-11 field goals. All three were from long range and he also hit 6-of-8 free throws.
Jeff Daisley grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots for Mercyhurst. Foul trouble limited Terry Smith to just 22 minutes in the game.
Findlay shot just 38 percent (18-of-47) in the game. The Lakers hit on 40 percent (19-of-48), but hit only 4-of-15 threes and 5-of-10 free throws.
The Oilers outrebounded Mercyhurst 37-26.
The loss snapped Mercyhurst's five-game win streak and also broke an eight-game home win streak.
It was Findlay's fifth straight win in the series.
Mercyhurst kept its half-game edge on Ashland in the GLIAC South. The Eagles fell 77-76 in overtime at Gannon.
The Lakers will host Ashland on Saturday, February 18 at 3:00 PM.
