Watertown, Mass. - Mercyhurst got 38 saves from freshman Tyler Small in taming the Bentley Falcons 5-2 Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey game. The Lakers, 17-10-0 overall, improved to 15-6-0 in the conference and leap-frogged Sacred Heart for second place with 30 points. The Pioneers, who have 29 points, were idle. Mercyhurst still trails first-place Holy Cross, 5-2 winners over Canisius Friday, by three points.

Senior forward Dave Borrelli and sophomore forward Ben Cottreau, each of whom had three-point nights, scored for Mercyhurst in the first period. Borrelli scored his team-leading 19th marker at 4:10 and Cottreau notched his 11th at 16:44 as the Lakers outshot the Falcons 17-10 in the opening 20 minutes.

Cottreau made it 3-0 at 2:13 of the second before Bentley rallied. The Falcons got on the board at 4:45 of the middle period when Brendan McCartin beat Small on a Bentley power play. Although there was no further scoring in the second, Bentley inched to within 3-2 at 5:29 of the third when forward Ryan Mayhew scored an even strength marker. But Mercyhurst quieted the crowd with a pair of goals within 1:29 late in regulation. Freshman forward Chris Trafford tallied his 9th at 16:47 and Borrelli finished Bentley with a power play goal, his second of the game, at 18:13.

Junior forward Scott Champagne and senior forward Scott Reynolds, who entered the game with 99 points each in their careers, hit the magic number. Champagne assisted on the Lakers' first three goals and now has 102 points. Reynolds helped on Borrelli's second of the game and now has exactly 100 points. Mercyhurst and Bentley divided 80 shots equally in the affair. The Lakers finished 1 of 6 on the power play while the Falcons were 1 of 7. Bentley junior goalie Ray Jean took the loss.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series Saturday night at 7:30.
