Dec. 10, 2006

Stats

Pittsburgh, Pa. - #1 Mercyhurst scored three power play goals and one shorthanded Sunday to defeat Robert Morris 5-0 and conclude the 2006 portion of the schedule. The Lakers improved to 16-1-1 overall and to 2-0-0 in College Hockey America. The Colonials dropped to 5-12-2 and 0-2-0 respectively.

Sophomore Valerie Chouinard got the only goal the Lakers would need late in the first when she collected her team-leading 10th power play goal of the year with help from senior Stefanie Bourbeau and sophomore Natalie Payne. The Lakers outshot the Colonials 18-3 in the first period.

Mercyhurst extended the lead to 3-0 after forty minutes thanks to a power play goal by freshman Meghan Agosta at 4:49 and a shorthanded effort from Bourbeau at 13:27. Agosta was assisted by senior Ashley Pendleton and Payne while Bourbeau was helped by Agosta and junior Danielle Ayearst. Mercyhurst owned a 17-3 advantage in shots in the middle frame.

The Lakers closed the scoring in the third with Chouinard's second of the game and 14th of the year from Stephanie Jones at 2:01 and Agosta's second of the contest and team-leading 15th of the season, a power play marker at 18:06. Senior Julia Colizza assisted on the game's final tally.

Agosta finished 2006 with an eight-game scoring streak and has scored at least one goal in her last seven contests.

Mercyhurst sophomore goalie Courtney Drennen, making only her second start of the season, benefited from the offensive display in picking up her first win and tenth of her career. She hadn't seen action since a 3-3 tie against Clarkson in the Lakers' fourth game of the season. Robert Morris sophomore Brianne McLaughlin was brilliant in defeat, stopping 55 Mercyhurst shots in the process. The Lakers allowed the Colonials only seven shots in the affair.

The Lakers scored on their fourth power play of the game, snapping an 0 for 23 streak. Mercyhurst finished 3 of 8 with the skater advantage while the Colonials were 0 for 8.

Mercyhurst won't play again until January 5 and 6 when Cornell visits the Ice Center.
