#3 Mercyhurst used three power play goals, one in each period, to defeat stubborn Colgate 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink to remain unbeaten and sweep the weekend series. The Lakers improved to 9-0-1 overall while the Raiders dropped to 2-6-1.
Sophomore forward Valerie Chouinard did the damage in the first and third periods with her seventh and eighth markers of the season. Junior forward and assistant captain Stephanie Jones knocked in her fourth goal of the season in the second.
Mercyhurst owned a 2-0 advantage after forty minutes, but Colgate made things interesting when freshman forward Katie Stewart parked one behind Mercyhurst junior goalie Laura Hosier nearly eight minutes into the final period. But Chouinard cashed her second of the game about five minutes later and the Mercyhurst defense did the rest.
Mercyhurst, a 4-2 winner Friday night in the series' opener, outshot Colgate 29-15. The Lakers collected their three power play markers in six chances while the Raiders were 0 of 6. Hosier remained unbeaten on the season at 9-0-0 while Colgate senior Brook Wheeler, who made 26 saves, saw her record fall to 2-5-1.
Senior captain Julia Colizza helped on all three lamplighters while Chouinard and Jones had two points apiece. The Lakers improved to 9-1-2 lifetime against the Raiders.
Head coach Michael Sisti is proud of his team's performance so far: "It's great to be undefeated at this point. We've had contributions from a lot of people thus far and we've handled adversity well. There's still a long way to go and we still have four tough games left on this road trip."
Mercyhurst is idle now until November 17 and 18 when it visits perennial power St. Lawrence for a two-game set. The Lakers will then play #10 Boston College and #2 New Hampshire the following weekend at the UNH Thanksgiving tournament.
Meanwhile, four freshmen members of the team will compete for their respective countries next week at Canada's Four Nations' Cup to be held in Kitchener, Ontario.
Canada's roster has 15 members of its 2006 gold medal winning Olympic team, including Mercyhurst forward Meghan Agosta. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst forward Angelica Lorsell and defender Johanna Malmstrom will play for Sweden and defender Katariina Soikkanen will compete for Finland.
