Nov. 3, 2006

Stats

Hamilton, NY - Mercyhurst survived an early first period scare from Colgate and remained unbeaten with a 4-2 victory Friday night at Starr Rink. The unbeaten and #3-ranked Lakers improved to 8-0-1 while the Raiders had a two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 2-5-1.

Despite being outshot 12-5 in the first 20 minutes, Colgate took a 1-0 lead and left the ice with a 2-1 advantage. Colgate senior Tara French and freshman Marissa Dombovy (power play) sandwiched goals around the sixth of the year by Mercyhurst freshman sensation Meghan Agosta. All three markers came within a 4:08 span early in the period.

Colgate maintained the one-goal lead until midway in the middle frame when Mercyhurst junior winger Stephanie Jones tied the affair at 10:25 with her second lamplighter of the season. Senior team captain Julia Colizza followed with her sixth of the season just two-and-a-half minutes later to give Mercyhurst a 3-2 lead, one it would never relinquish. The Lakers had a substantial 15-4 margin in shots in the middle period.

Sophomore forward Valerie Chouinard extended the Lakers' lead to 4-2 and ended the scoring with her sixth of the year early in the third.

Mercyhurst junior goalie Laura Hosier improved to 8-0-0 while stopping 16 Colgate shots. Colgate senior Brook Wheeler made 32 saves as her record fell to 2-4-1. Chouinard (1g, 1a) and senior winger Stefanie Bourbeau (2a) led the offense with two points apiece. Mercyhurst, which outshot Colgate 36-18, snapped a three-game winless streak against the Raiders and now leads the all-time series 8-1-2.

I'm proud of the way our team battled tonight," head coach Michael Sisti commented after the contest. "We came back against a good team in a very tough place to play."

The teams will conclude the two-game series Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
