Mercyhurst used a 16-2 run in the second half to erase a three-point deficit and claim an 81-67 win over Assumption at the Nyack Classic. Avi Fogel scored a game-high 21 to lead the Lakers.
Second half shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the Lakers shot 58 percent in the final 20 minutes and held the Greyhounds to just 36 percent.
Mercyhurst also pounded Assumption on the glass, 42-23, despite no Laker grabbing more than seven rebounds.
After an Assumption (0-2) three-pointer by Leroy Byron broke a 50-50 deadlock, back-to-back jumpers by Ronnie Williams and Mitch Brennan put the Lakers (1-1) ahead for good, 54-53, with 9:28 left to play. Shelby Chaney scored six of his 15 points in the run as Mercyhurst built its lead to 66-55 with just under five minutes to play.
Mercyhurst led for the entire first half and twice built its lead to as many as seven. But the Greyhounds fought back in the second half with a 14-4 run that put them ahead 47-45 with 13:34 left in the game.
Four Lakers scored in double figures in the win. Fogel led all players with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 8-of-10 at the line. Chaney had 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks. Mitch Brennan hit 4-of-5 for 10 points, and T.J. Mathis scored 10 as well.
Byron scored 20 to lead the Greyhounds. The guard was on fire from long range, hitting 6-of-9 threes. Greg Twomey scored 18 points. Corey Diethorn added 11 rebounds, but no other Greyhound had more than three.
Mercyhurst returns home for its home opener on Tuesday, November 21 at 8:00 PM in the MAC against Roberts Wesleyan.
