Mercyhurst (17-3, 9-1 GLIAC) scored twice in the first 11 minutes and Jason Pedra added a pair of insurance goals in the second half as the Lakers claimed a 4-1 win over crosstown rival Gannon (11-6-1, 5-4-1) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game.
The Lakers struck first as Kurt Young took a rebound of a Tyler Emerick shot and scored in the eighth minute. Less than a minute and a half later, Kyle Jackson netted a score off a shot from 15 yards to the far right for a 2-0 Mercyhurst lead.
Pedra netted both of his scores in the second half, with the first coming at 60:21 with an assist from Matt Richards.
His second goal came on a free kick from 30 yards less than a minute and a half after the lone Gannon goal. Geneo Oberst scored for the Golden Knights off a corner kick by Jonathan Brickman at 82:52.
The Laker defense held Gannon to just a pair of shots on goal.
Daniel Mudd made one save in net for Mercyhurst.
Steven Boehmer saved four shots for Gannon.
With the win, Mercyhurst awaits word on a potential NCAA bid. The Lakers are currently ranked No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region. The top four teams in each region earn bids. Selections will be announced October 30 with first round games taking place November 2 and 3.
