Erie, Pa. -
Freshman forward Meghan Agosta scored two special teams' goals as Mercyhurst won an early clash of unbeaten teams by downing Clarkson 5-2 Friday night before over 800 fans at the Ice Center. The #3 Lakers improved to 3-0 while the Golden Knights, ranked #11 in the early going, suffered their first loss in three games.
The two teams accounted for five goals in a wild first twenty minutes. Mercyhurst freshman winger Angelica Lorsell scored her first collegiate goal just 19 seconds into the period to jumpstart the offense. But the Golden Knights took advantage of a Mercyhurst penalty, one of ten assessed the Lakers in the contest, as junior forward Katie Morrison tied the game just over a minute later. Agosta's first goal, a power play tally at 3:50, put the Lakers back in command and junior winger Stephanie Jones lit the lamp just 22 seconds later for a 3-1 lead. But Clarkson scored its second power play goal of the period, this time courtesy of freshman forward Britney Selina, to trim the lead to 3-2 after twenty minutes. The Lakers outshot the Golden Knights 14-7.
Mercyhurst stiffened defensively the rest of the way and got solo goals in each of the last two periods for the final margin. Senior forward Stefanie Bourbeau banged home a power play goal at 9:11 of the second and Agosta finished Clarkson and the scoring with a nifty shorthanded strike midway in the third.
Mercyhurst outshot Clarkson 41-14 in the contest as junior goalie Laura Hosier bested Clarkson senior Kira Hurley.
Mercyhurst improved to 5-0 lifetime against the Golden Knights who had outscored three prior opponents, including an exhibition foe, by a combined 18-1 margin entering the game.
The two teams will conclude the weekend set Saturday at 2:00pm.
