Mercyhurst got a pair of goals from three different players and used five power play goals to subdue Maine, 8-1, Sunday and sweep the two-game weekend series, The Lakers, ranked #5 by USCHO.com and #6 by USAToday, improved to 2-0 in the young season while the Black Bears, who dropped a 5-2 verdict Saturday, fell to 0-2.
The 2-0 start is the first for Mercyhurst since 2002 when the Lakers edged Bemidji State twice, 1-0 and 2-1, at the Ice Center.
Maine took an early 1-0 lead when when freshman winger Taryn Peacock scored just 39 seconds into the game. But Mercyhurst regrouped and took a 3-1 lead after a period on goals by senior forward Stefanie Bourbeau (Charlesbourg, Quebec) at 7:27; freshman forward Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ontario), a power play at 9:58; and senior captain Julia Colizza (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), also with a skater up at 16:58. Mercyhurst owned a 15-4 shot advantage in the opening twenty minutes.
The Black Bears outshot Mercyhurst 11-7 in the middle frame, but Chouinard provided the period's lone goal with a power play lamplighter at 4:34.
It was all Mercyhurst in the third. Colizza stretched the lead to 5-1 with her second power play goal of the game at 7:15. The Lakers then scored three times in the game's final six minutes to produce the final margin. Chouinard tallied her second of the contest at 14:16 on a power play, Bourbeau notched her second of the game at even strength at 16:55, and junior winger Stephanie Jones (Grande Prairie, Alberta) finished the scoring with her first of the year at 18:50.
Mercyhurst finished the game with a 34-17 advantage in shots and five power play goals in eight chances. The Black Bears were 0 for 12 with an extra skater.
Mercyhurst junior goaltender Laura Hosier picked up her second win of the season while sophomore Geneviece Turgeon lost her second straight decision. Mercyhurst improved to 3-1-0 in the all-time series against the Black Bears. The two teams hadn't skated against each other for six years.
Mercyhurst won't play again until October 13 and 14 when it begins a six-game homestand with a pair of games against Clarkson.
