Shippensburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst won two more matches Saturday at the East Coast Duals and finished the two-day event 4-0. Mercyhurst outscored its two Saturday opponents 73-6, giving the Lakers a scoring margin of 151-18 in their four wins.
The Lakers defeated Newberry 37-3 Saturday morning before closing activity with a 36-3 verdict over Anderson (S.C.). The two wins improved the Lakers' overall record to 9-7. Mercyhurst won nine of 10 bouts in both victories.
Don Cummings started the Newberry dual with a fall in 1:22 as Mercyhurst won the first six bouts. Hudson Harrison needed a tie-breaker at 174, but Frank Zatta followed with a 17-0 technical fall at 184 as the Lakers jumped ahead 20-0. Payne Lint (17-1) and Leonard Calhoun (18-0) added tech. falls at 125 and 133, respectively, before J.J. Zanetta closed the match with a major decision at 141.
Cummings also led off the win over Anderson. He notched a major decision as the Lakers won the first six bouts to build a 25-0 lead. The first five bouts, including Cummings' win, all ended in lopsided Mercyhurst victories. Zack Schafer (22-6) and Zatta (17-0) both won by technical fall and Will Tedder (10-2) and Harrison (8-0) each scored major decisions. Lint added another technical fall win (17-0) for Mercyhurst.
Mercyhurst will return home for three matches next weekend. The Lakers will host Ashland Friday night at 7:30 before tangling with both Limestone and Heidelberg Sunday.
