Indiana, Pa. -
Mercyhurst built a 3-0 second half lead, then had to hang on to edge Indiana University of Pennsylvania 3-2 Wednesday. The Lakers improved to 4-1 on the season while IUP suffered its first loss in four decisions.
Sophomore Jacque Sluga scored her second and third goals of the season within a five minute span in the first half to give the Lakers a 2-0 advantage. When freshman Sarah Powell found the back of the net at 61:38, her team-leading fifth of the year, Mercyhurst appeared headed for a certain win.
But the Indians got back into the game at 69:34 when Crystal Heder beat junior GK Karen Eade and, when Amanda Fecik scored with three minutes left, IUP trailed by only a marker.
Mercyhurst regrouped, however, and IUP was denied the equalizer.
The Lakers will continue their road trip Sunday when they play at Salem (WVa) International.
