Erie, Pa. -
Junior forward Mandi Turner's goal, midway in the second half, gave the #3-ranked Golden Bears of Kutztown a hard-fought 1-0 win over Mercyhurst Saturday at Tullio Field. Kutztown, a 1-0 winner at Slippery Rock Friday night, improved to 9-2 on the season while the Lakers dropped to 3-7.
Both teams had chances in the first half, but couldn't solve either KU senior GK Trista Hershey or Mercyhurst junior netminder Julie Smith, both of whom were credited with six stops in the first 35 minutes. The Lakers, in particular, had several early flurries, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The score remained deadlocked until Turner deflected a shot by senior Laura Kline past Smith with just under 20 minutes left in regulation. The score came shortly after a Kutztown penalty corner. Kutztown held the Lakers at bay the rest of the game.
The Golden Bears outshot Mercyhurst 17-12, but had a sizeable advantage in penalty corners, 13-3. Mercyhurst, a 3-2 overtime winner over St. Francis (Pa.) Friday, is now 2-3 in one-goal games. The Lakers will begin a six-game road trip next Thursday with a 4:00pm game at Houghton.
