Mercyhurst won for the fifth time in its last six games and improved to 10-2 overall with a 70-47 win over Post University in the First Round of the Doubletree Doc Jacobs Classic hosted by Saint Michael's College.
Mercyhurst built leads of 9-2 and 22-11. The Eagles stayed in it thanks to a pair of buckets to narrow the lead to 24-19 with just over four minutes remaining in the first stanza. The Eagles would struggle for the remaining minutes of the half. Post was outscored 12-6 over the final four minutes and the Lakers went into the locker room with a 36-25 edge.
The Eagles stayed in it in the second half, cutting the lead to 43-37 with 13:30 left. Post would only score three points over the next seven minutes as Mercyhurst extended to a 61-40 lead. The Eagles would get no closer then 17 from there.
Mercyhurst got 20 points from junior forward Mitch Brennan, 17 from sophomore guard Terry Smith, 13 from junior transfer Avi Fogel, and 10 off the bench from senior Jeff Daisley. Mercyhurst outrebounded Post 34-28 as the Lakers held the Eagles to 43% shooting and forced 23 turnovers, including five in a seven possession span in the second half. The Lakers shot 48% from the floor.
Mercyhurst, now 9-0 this season in non-conference games, will play Concordia of New York Friday at 5:00pm in the tournament's final day.
