Mercyhurst went 1-1 in a pair of dual matches at Buffalo. The Lakers fell to the host Bison, 34-3, but rebounded for a 23-13 score over Appalachian State.
Payne Lint, wrestling at 125, was the lone Laker to win both his matches. He picked up a 7-5 decision for Mercyhurst's only bout victory against Buffalo, then notched a 2-0 win against his Mountaineer foe.
J.J. Zanetta scored a major decision at 141 (14-3) against Appalachian State to break a 3-3 tie. After the Mountaineers pulled to within 7-6, Will Tedder won by fall at 157 in 5:59. His pin put the Lakers ahead 13-6 and Zack Shafer followed with a 13-4 major decision at 165 for the 17-6 advantage. Frank Zatta at 184 and Paul Bergman at 197 won decisions to seal the victory for Mercyhurst.
With the split, Mercyhurst is 4-5 on the season, including three wins over Division I competition.
Both Appalachian State and Buffalo wrestle at the Division I level.
The Lakers are now idle until heading to the Midwest Classic at Indianapolis on January 6 & 7.
