Mercyhurst (7-2, 2-2 GLIAC South) dropped its road opener, falling 77-52 at No. 19 Grand Valley (6-2, 3-1 GLIAC North).
Avi Fogel, Terry Smith and Mitch Brennan each scored 11 for Mercyhurst. Fogel was 3-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. He also led Mercyhurst with five assists. Smith and Brennan each went 3-of-5 from long range. Richard Field led MC with four rebounds. Cory Tubo scored a career-high four points and Kerry Wilkinson had three steals.
Callistus Eziukwu hit all seven of his field goals and went 5-of-6 from the line for a game-high 19. He also posted game-highs with six assists and seven steals. Dan Redder came off the bench for 12 on 4-of-5 shooting, and Pete Trammell went 5-of-7 for 12 points.
Mercyhurst led by as many as six on three occasions in the early going. An Andy Kubinski layup gave Mercyhurst a 14-8 advantage with 15:23 left in the first half. Grand Valley then went on a 20-0 run to break the game open. Eziukwu had seven points in the run. Grand Valley led 35-24 at the intermission.
A 15-1 run to open the second period built the GVSU advantage to 50-25 with 14:31 left in the game.
Grand Valley shot 66 percent (29-of-44) from the floor, including 17-of-21 in the second half. Mercyhurst hit 42 percent, including 6-of-13 from long range (46 percent). MC also hit 14-of-17 free throws (82 percent), all in the final 20 minutes.
Grand Valley held a 27-12 rebounding advantage. Mercyhurst forced GVSU into 19 turnovers, but committed 20.
Mercyhurst is idle until Saturday, December 17, when Slippery Rock visits Mercyhurst for a 3:00 PM tip in a non-conference matchup.
