Mercyhurst suffered its first loss of the season as Hillsdale handed the Lakers a 63-52 defeat in Mercyhurst's GLIAC opener.
Andy Kubinski led the Lakers (5-1, 0-1 GLIAC South) with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, with three steals. Avi Fogel hit 7-of-15 shots for 14 points. Mitch Brennan grabbed seven rebounds.
Cory Coe scored a game-high 16 for Hillsdale (3-1, 2-0 GLIAC South). All three of Coe's field goals were three pointers and the guard also hit 7-of-8 free throws. Drew Powell and John Farr scored 13 apiece. Tim Homan had seven rebounds.
Mercyhurst hit just 7-of-26 first half shots, as Hillsdale built a 27-18 halftime advantage. The Lakers rebounded to hit 15-of-30 in the second half and twice closed the lead to just six points. A 12-4 run cut it to six with 4:54 left to play on a Kubinski jumper. After Hillsdale answered with a score, Kubinski again brought the Lakers to within six at 54-48, but the Chargers fired back again to end the Mercyhurst threat.
Hillsdale went 16-of-20 from the free throw line (80 percent), while Mercyhurst attempted just five shots from the charity stripe. Both teams had 14 turnovers. Mercyhurst held a 31-29 advantage on the boards.
The Lakers will look to rebound when Wayne State visits Mercyhurst for a 3:00 PM tip off on Saturday, December 3.
