Erie, Pa. -
Mercyhurst's Kyle Jackson (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored two momentum-shifting goals and the Lakers defeated Gannon 3-1 Saturday afternoon before 405 fans at Gannon University Field.
Mercyhurst controlled the energy for the entire first half and led 2-0 at halftime. Tyler Emerick (Erie, Pa./Harborcreek) scored the contest's first goal in the 13th minute off an assist from Andy Tait (Halifax, England).
The Lakers increased their lead to 2-0 on Jackson's first goal. Mercyhurst's leading scorer gave his team all the momentum heading into halftime, scoring with only 37 seconds left in the half. Jason Pedra (Mississauga, Ontario) rolled a corner kick through a crowd in front of the net. Nobody touched the ball until Jackson received it and buried the shot into the upper, left corner of the net.
Gannon started the second half with renew enthusiasm. Jonathan Brickman (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) caught Mercyhurst goalkeeper Daniel Mudd (Hull, England) out of position and scored unassisted from a tough angle on the left side at the 50:26 mark.
The Gannon momentum was short lived as Mercyhurst needed only one minute and 20 seconds to answer. Jackson scored his second of the match and eighth of the season at the 51:46 mark.
Gannon out-shot Mercyhurst 16-9 and owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Mudd made three saves in goal for the Lakers. Alex Scott (Cape Town, South Africa) turned away five shots for the Golden Knights.
Mercyhurst concluded the season with an 8-8-4 overall record and 3-3-4 GLIAC mark. Gannon dropped to 10-5-3 overall and 5-2-3 in conference play. The Golden Knights needed a victory to grab at least a share of the GLIAC title, but finished the season in second place after Saturday's loss.
