Erie, Pa. -
A pair of second half goals by Kyle Jackson sealed a non-conference victory for Mercyhurst over Tiffin, 3-0, at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
Goalkeeper Daniel Mudd made seven saves and recorded his second straight shutout.
The Lakers entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a first half goal by Zach Hiltner at 29:44. The 15-yard score into the lower left corner was Hiltner's first goal of the season. It was the Lakers' first halftime lead of 2005.
In the second half, Sean Cordova fed Jackson twice to put the game away. The first came at 60:15, when Jackson shot from the left side into the center of the net past the diving Dragon goalkeeper, Mike Rutkowski. Jackson then polished the win off at 86:32 from 15 yards, high into the center over Rutkowski's leaping attempt.
Cordova's assists on both Jackson goals were his first two of the season.
The Dragons had a clear look at the back of the Mercyhurst goal at 59:12, but Andy Tait cleared the Tiffin shot right before it got into the goal.
It was the first win for the Lakers since a September 2 win over Lewis and the three goals were the most Mercyhurst scored in 2005.
Tiffin outshot the Lakers, 20-to-17, but Mercyhurst held a 9-to-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Mercyhurst plays again on October 8 against Truman State on the first day of Truman State's tournament.
