Mercyhurst completed a season sweep of Gannon by defeating the Lady Knights 3-2 (28-30, 30-21, 18-30, 30-13, 15-7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match Friday night at Gannon's Hammermill Center.
Mercyhurst, which upended Gannon 3-1 at the Athletic Center in its GLIAC opener, had a much tougher time Friday. The Lady Knights squeaked out a tough 30-28 victory in the opening game, outhitting Mercyhurst .282 to .186. Mercyhurst rebounded to take game two before Gannon exploded for 14 kills and only two errors in a convincing 30-18 game three triumph. The Lakers regrouped and picked up their play, hitting .439 in the fourth game and .533 in the fifth and deciding game to take the match.
Jenna Matson paced the Lakers with 24 kills and added 20 digs. Kristin Peterson had 21 kills and Megan Fargo chipped in with 13. Kari Clapham had 55 assists and tied Angela Furlano for the team-high with 25 digs. Furlano also had four aces.
Gannon fell to 5-18 overall and 0-13 in the GLIAC in dropping their 15th straight match, while Mercyhurst improved to 13-11 overall and 3-10 in GLIAC play. The Lakers will rest until next weekend when they continue conference play with home matches against Ashland Friday at 7:00pm and Findlay Saturday at 2:00pm. Saturday's contest will be "Senior Day".
