Louisville, Ky. -
Junior Tumaini Malenga's goal at 23:12 of the first half propelled the Bellarmine Knights to a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst Sunday. Bellarmine improved to 8-2 while the Lakers fell to 4-9. The match was played at Trager Field at the University of Louisville.
It was the second win over Mercyhurst this season for Bellarmine. The Knights edged the Lakers 3-2 in Erie on August 26, the season-opener for both teams.
Mercyhurst outshot Bellarmine 11-7 and came close several times in the second time to getting the equalizer. Sophomore Erin Kelleher had the Lakers' best chance when she moved in on a breakaway with about three minutes left in regulation. However, freshman Rachel Henderson made a dandy save to protect the lead.
The game marked the fifth one-goal loss this season for the Lakers, the second to the Knights, and the third in the last four games.
Mercyhurst will rest until Monday, October 10, when it continues a six-game road trip with a match at Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 4:00pm.
