Four players reached double figures in kills and Kari Clapham dished out 47 assists as Mercyhurst defeated Saginaw Valley State, 3-2, in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action. Game scores were 19-30, 30-28, 30-17, 31-29 and 15-12.
Jenna Matson paced the Lakers with 15 kills and 24 digs in the match. Kristin Peterson turned in 13 kills, and Lauren Kubinski had 11 kills and a team-high five blocks. In addition to her 47 assists, Clapham recorded 21 digs. Angelo Furlano registered 19.
It was a back-and-forth match for both teams. The Lakers fell by double digits in game one, but rebounded to take the next two, including a 30-17 frame in game three. The Cardinals then rallied and forced game five with a 31-29 victory in game four.
The victory snapped the Lakers' nine-match losing streak and improved Mercyhurst to 12-10 overall and 2-9 in the conference. Saginaw remains winless in GLIAC competition at 0-11 and is 6-18 on the season.
The Lakers will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Northwood tomorrow for a 4:00 PM.
