Mercyhurst University is blazing a new trail in women's athletics, announcing Zack Helsley as the first-ever head coach of its newly launched women's flag football program—a historic move that brings the Erie native full circle to his alma mater.

Helsley attended Mercyhurst Preparatory School and Mercyhurst University, graduating from the latter with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and a master's in Organizational Leadership.

"I am truly excited for the opportunity to be named the first head coach of women's flag football at Mercyhurst University," Helsley said. "This is more than just creating a new program—it's about helping guide a new era for women's athletics on campus and contributing to the rapid growth of a sport that is opening new doors for female athletes across the country."

Mercyhurst is one of many schools that have added women's flag football to their sports lineup. Currently, an estimated 65 colleges and universities nationwide offer the sport.

Helsley is no stranger to the gridiron. He was a crucial part of the Mercyhurst football team for six seasons. In his graduate season, he was named a team captain of the first-ever Division I team. He'll be looking to take lessons he learned from football head coach Ryan Riemedio.

"Through my time under Coach Riemedio, I've learned the importance of valuing relationships, leading with positivity, and holding myself accountable on a daily basis," he said. "One of the most impactful lessons I've learned from him was how to connect with athletes on a personal level to inspire growth both on and off the field. Coach Riemedio has been a mentor and a role model to me, and the experiences I've had under his leadership have given me the foundation and confidence to succeed in this position."

Helsley will make the transition from working as a strength and conditioning coach at Mercyhurst to his new role. During the past semester, he worked with the football, baseball, softball, and both lacrosse teams. He's excited to use his experience in sports to connect with athletes and build something special.

"[My past experiences] have taught me how to connect with players on a personal level, tailor instruction to individual needs, and motivate athletes to reach their full potential. Together, these experiences have prepared me to lead, teach, and inspire in this role," Helsley said.

Helsley is ready to help make a difference at the place that he's called home for so long.

"Being named a head coach for my alma mater is an honor and a deeply meaningful full-circle moment for me," he said. "From playing my high school games on this very campus, to competing here as a student-athlete, and now stepping into a leadership role, Mercyhurst has been at the center of my personal and athletic journey."
