Mercyhurst University Athletics

Dave Hewett

Dave Hewett enters his sixth year in 2013-14 as the assistant coach with both men's and women's Mercyhurst golf programs.

Hewett became the women's golf coach at Mercyhurst just four months after the former Laker standout was elected to the Mercyhurst Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006-07, he added the responsibilities of men's assistant coach. In 2008-09, Hewett decided to step back from the head coaching duties and assumed the role of assistant coach for both the men's and women's golf programs.

Hewett is one of the best golfers ever to have attended Mercyhurst. In his senior year alone, he had the low round in ten of 13 matches, won two tournaments, averaged a team best 76.6, and placed tenth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Golf Championships. He participated in the 1987 Division II National Championships and was a Golf Coaches Association of America Academic All-American, one of just eight people selected. Dave was a 1987 NCAA and CoSIDA Academic All-American, a Second Team GTE Academic All-American, and the 1987 Mercyhurst male Student Athlete of the Year.

He was on the Dean's List all four years and graduated summa cum laude in 1987 with a 3.95 QPA in accounting and computer systems.

After graduation, he worked in public accounting for 16 years before joining the Mercyhurst family as the college's controller in November of 2002. He and his wife, Elaine, live in Erie.
