Athletic Bands FAQ

You're ready to join the Mercyhurst University athletic pep bands, but you have a few questions. We've got you covered with our Frequently Asked Questions.

Are athletic pep bands open to everyone?
Yes! Membership is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate, regardless of their major.

Are scholarships available for participation?
Yes! Freshmen are eligible for scholarships.  Contact the Director for details and an application.  Some restrictions apply.

What is the time commitment?
Rehearsal is approximately 4 hours per week, with performances mainly on nights (Wednesday night basketball; Friday night ice hockey) and weekends (football, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s basketball). A schedule of required performances and rehearsals will be available at the conclusion of each semester for the following semester. Additional community/off campus events may be scheduled as availability allows.

I'm a music major -- is it possible to participate in the athletic bands?
Absolutely! We will work with your schedule needs to ensure participation in the athletic bands enhances your academic experience. The experience you'll gain will prove very beneficial when it comes time to find a job. This is especially important for students who have not marched before (other than parades). Take advantage of the leadership opportunities and the chance to develop skills on a secondary instrument. Plus, it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet people!

What type of music does the band play?
The fall Laker Pride show consists of a variety of styles.  For example, the opener may be a serious classical/religious selection.  The middle feature may switch gears and be a jazz or jazz rock tune and the exit may be classic rock and roll.  For other performances....... tailgates, basketball, hockey, open houses, etc......the bands play a variety of "People Pleaser" tunes.  These selections may include anything from Sweet Caroline to Mambo #5 and YMCA.  There is never a shortage of excitement when are bands are performing.

Will I be required to audition?
Only if you feel it is necessary and you wish to be considered for a specific part or section. To obtain audition materials and literature, please contact the director (rreid@mercyhurst.edu or 814-881-7027). Every attempt will be made to schedule audition times at the convenience of the student or during summer orientations.

Will I need my own instrument?
Students will be expected to provide their own instrument and related supplies. Exceptions to this include, but are not limited to, marching percussion, sousaphones, tenor/baritone sax, some marching trombones/baritones, electric bass.
