Compliance for Prospective Student-Athletes

We are thrilled you are considering joining Laker Athletics! The process to become a Division I student-athlete involves many steps and we want to make that process simple for you.

The first thing you need to do if you are interested in playing a sport in college is to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (eligibilitycenter.org). The next step is taking care of business with your high school classes. Check out the NCAA Division I Initial Eligibility Requirements sheet below.

NCAA Definition of Prospective Student-Athlete
13.02.9 - A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete, if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally. An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever occurs earlier):

a) The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution's regular academic year (excluding summer); or
b) The individual participates in a regular-squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution.

Create an Eligibility Center certification account here (PDF).  All freshmen entering a Division I or II institution for the first time must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. The Eligibility Center certifies that incoming student-athletes meet the initial eligibility requirements for academics and amateurism. Additionally, select transfer students (NCAA Division III, NAIA and junior colleges) may be required to obtain academic and amateurism certifications through the NCAA Eligibility Center.
