Athletic Insurance Policy
Primary Health Insurance:
Mercyhurst University requires all student athletes and all international students to have certain minimum health insurance to attend classes and participate in varsity athletics.
All student-athletes must complete 1 of 2 options for health insurance—1: Verification/opt-out/waive or 2: Enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Both of these options can be completed in the SHIP portal, please review the summer paperwork document from the coaches.
All international students will see the charge for the student health insurance on their student account on a semester basis.
If you feel you have health insurance that meets the Mercyhurst requirements, please refer to the "verification/waive/opt-out" directions in the summer paperwork document from the coaches. line.
If you are a domestic student who needs to re-enroll in the university sponsored insurance, please refer to the "enrollment"directions in the summer paperwork document from the coaches.

Requirements: Mercyhurst University does not accept temporary, individual or travel policies of any kind.
- Plan Offers at least 80% coverage for in-patient and out-patient services. Coverage must be for both emergency and non-emergency services (routine services, including wellness and preventative).
- Does not have an annual individual deductible greater than $2,500.
- Includes Mental Health Benefits
- Has a local provider network, allowing for claims to be paid at the highest amount. Providers must be found who accept the coverage within 100 miles of the University.
- Does not contain any language limiting coverage on pre-existing conditions.
- Must cover injuries that occur during participation in intercollegiate athletics.
- Has limits of at least $90,000 that includes coverage for sport-related injuries.
Secondary Health Insurance:
Mercyhurst Secondary Athletic Insurance is only for injuries that occur as a result of participation in the student-athlete's particular sport and are treated at an "in-network" facility for the student-athletes particular health insurance. Mercyhurst University is not responsible for pre-existing or non-athletic related injuries. The Athletic Insurance policy provides "excess" or "secondary" insurance coverage in the event of injury sustained by the student-athlete while participating in the play or practice of intercollegiate athletics.
- The policy of the parent or student-athlete is billed first in all cases.
- The remaining amount due is then submitted to the school's secondary policy for payment.
- It is the responsibility of the student athlete to ensure all bills and explanation of benefits are provided to Mercyhurst University. If the student-athlete receives bills or explanations of benefits in the mail, they MUST bring them to the athletic training room.
- It is the responsibility of the student athlete to inform the Athletic Training Department of any change in their health insurance. Failure to update insurance will result in a termination of the University's responsibility to pay medical bills.
