ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst softball team woke up bright and early to host Wagner this morning for game three of the series. The two teams each earned a victory yesterday. Most of today's game was highlighted by pitching and defensive excellence.
Alexa North was in the circle for most of the game and pitched seven strikeouts and zero walks.
Alexandra Acosta-Reyes was 2-2 in the batter's box, stole bases, but was left on base both times. The Seahawks completely ran away with the game in the final frame and won, 10-0.
Mercyhurst (2-14, 1-2 NEC) and Wagner (6-14, 4-2 NEC) both began the game with pitching dominance. North retired the top of the order with three-consecutive strikeouts. In the bottom of the second, both Acosta-Reyes and
Braylynn Kelly recorded hits. However, Kelly was caught stealing and Acosta-Reyes was left on base.
The game remained scoreless throughout the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, the Seahawks broke the deadlock from a two-RBI single that was aided by a slip-up from
Shailene Riemedio. This gave Wagner a 2-0 lead.
The score was still just 2-0 headed into the sixth, with the Lakers still unable to capitalize on their opportunities. In the seventh inning, Wagner ran away with the game by scoring eight runs. The scoring was highlighted by RBI singles and a double. The Seahawks continued to capitalize on the Lakers' errors and effectively manage the bases as they brought their tally to 10. The Lakers could not respond in the bottom of the seventh and dropped the series finale, 10-0.
The Lakers hit the road and head to Ohio this Wednesday, March 25 to face Kent State.
