Lakers Fall to RMU in Home-Opening Series

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst softball team played their home-opening series today vs. Robert Morris. Yesterday, the Lakers took the lead in game one and then the Colonials struck back and run-ruled them. Game two was close, ending 2-0 in favor of RMU. Today, the Colonials' offensive prowess proved to be too much for the Lakers as they won 12-2 and 15-4, both in five-inning games. 
 
Robert Morris (11-6) took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. This featured a triple to left field, a run scored on a passed ball, and a solo home run. Mercyhurst (1-11) was unable to score in the first frame. In the second inning, Mackenzie Gillis hit a single to center field, driving in Natalie Cully for the Laker's first run. RMU added another run, bringing the score to 3-1. The third inning saw Robert Morris extend their lead with another solo home run. The Lakers did not score, concluding the inning at 4-1.
 
In the fourth inning, Karlie Kasten doubled to left field, scoring Gillis. Robert Morris responded with three runs, including an RBI triple. The inning ended with Robert Morris leading 7-2. RMU asserted their dominance in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Key plays included a double by Kaylyn Hopf and a two-RBI triple. The Lakers were unable to score in their half of the inning. The first game concluded with Robert Morris winning 12-2 in five innings.
 
Mercyhurst (1-12) started strong in the first inning with Kasten and Emelie Pascual each singling, followed by a series of errors that allowed Kasten to score. Pascual and Gillis also crossed the plate due to errors. Alexandra Acosta-Reyes grounded out, bringing in two more runs and ending the inning with the Lakers holding their first lead of the day.
 
In the third inning, Robert Morris (12-6) took control with 10 runs. This included a two-run homer and additional hits and errors. The Lakers were unable to respond in their half of the third and the Colonials now were in position to mercy rule again. RMU adding one more run in the fifth inning. The Lakers could not generate any additional offense, ending this second game with a final score of 15-4 in five innings
 
The Lakers will return home for their next series as they open NEC play vs. Wagner. The first two games are set for Saturday, March 21 and the third game will be played on Sunday.
