Nashville, TN – Mercyhurst Stunt made history this week, competing in their first-ever Stunt National Championship. The Lakers showed grit and determination throughout the tournament, upsetting UT Martin 15-10 and advancing to the semifinals before falling to the University of Kentucky.
How it Happened
The Lakers entered the tournament as the #4 seed and faced an immediate test against #1-ranked California Baptist University. The matchup proved to be a tough one, as the top-seeded team controlled the game and held Mercyhurst scoreless in a 15-0 defeat.
Undeterred, Mercyhurst moved into the next round of the bracket to take on familiar foe and #3 seed UT Martin — a team that had defeated the Lakers twice this season, including a narrow win in the Mid-America West Conference Championship. This time, the Lakers flipped the script. In a thrilling back-and-forth contest, Mercyhurst rose to the occasion and pulled off a statement 15-10 upset win to punch their ticket to the semifinals.
With momentum on their side, the Lakers took on #2 seed University of Kentucky with a spot in the national finals on the line. Despite a valiant effort and strong execution, Mercyhurst was ultimately overpowered by the dominant Kentucky squad, falling 15-1 to end their tournament run.
Although their championship dreams came to an end, the Lakers left Nashville with their heads held high after a historic and impressive debut at the Stunt National Championship.
