Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Wrestling adds a new member to their staff for the 2023-24 season, announced the university Wednesday afternoon as former Clarion Golden Eagle Kyle Greenwald rejoins the PSAC for the Lakers.
"I'm very excited to welcome Kyle to the Mercyhurst community," said Head Coach Mike Wehler. "He will be the first full time assistant in program history and I'm really looking forward to his impact on our program. Kyle wrestled at Clarion University under Keith Ferraro, a coach that I have a lot of respect for, and it gives me a lot of confidence that Kyle is coming in with experiences and a knowledge base from a very good mentor."
Greenwald wrestled for Clarion from 2014 to 2018, graduating with a Bachelors in Marketing and making the Dean's List in each of his seasons with the Golden Eagles while being named the recipient of the Nick Gavazzi Academic Achievement Award for the 2016-17 campaign. His wealth of experience on the mat within the PSAC to go along with his commitment in the classroom promises to be a key for the Lakers going forward.
"Kyle has the skills to be a head coach at some point in the future and I'm looking forward to learning from each other while we advance our wrestling program forward," said Wehler about the future of Greenwald and Mercyhurst wrestling.
Greenwald began his time as a coach in the spring of 2019 with the Hollywood Hooligans, teaching the youth about wrestling followed by a stint with Somerset Academy as an Assistant Coach. In October 2020, Greenwald made his way to St. Thomas University in Miami, Fl. where he has served as a volunteer assistant while owning the title of associate head coach for Fort Lauderdale High School since April of 2021.
Greenwald begins his duties with the team immediately as the team readies for another season.
