Quakertown, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Softball team won their opening game of the PSAC tournament over Shippensburg who is ranked third in the region in the most recent rankings. The rankings came out prior to today's game and had the Lakers ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Ship manufactured a run on a SAC Fly that put them on the board.
The Lakers were held hitless through four innings until Brianne Egelston opened the fifth with a single up the middle. After an out Chloe McQuestion followed it up a single of her own to put runners on first and second for Madison Fry. On an 0-2 pitch the conference's leading hitter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eliza Reynolds put the ball in play and it snuck under the shortstops glove into the outfield. Egelston and McQuestion both scored on the play to give the Lakers the lead. After a pitching change and an out Allison Dejidas stepped to the plate with two runners on. On a 1-2 pitch, the junior hit a towering homer to left center field to plate three runs and give the Lakers a 5-1 lead.
That was all Mikaela Schramski needed in the circle. She allowed one more run in the sixth but that was all. She scattered seven hits over seven innings while producing 10 groundouts and seven flyouts. In her 14th win of the season she struck out four.
