ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team cemented their position in the upcoming PSAC Tournament as the No.2 seed on Saturday afternoon with a 13-9 win over cross town rival Gannon.
Graduating players Heather Greenway, Nina Stephens, Sara Simms, Kenzie Schroeder, Kaitlyn Lippert, Erin Cox, McKenzie Galvin, Anna Kenyon, Julia Ruscio, Kiera Boettcher, Marissa Comerate, Mackenzie Murphy, Rachel Hirst, and Hailey McCarty were all honored before the contest as part of Senior Day festivities.
Comerate started scoring in the first quarter with a strike on the Lakers first possession of the game. The Golden Knights responded with a goal on their ensuing possession to notch the score back even. Then Boettcher tallied her 13th goal of the season to put the Lakers back on top before Gannon again tied the contest again at the 10 minute mark of the first quarter.
From here the Lakers would begin an 8-0 scoring run that would last till the 4:45 mark of the third quarter.
Maggie Newton and Hirst rounded out the first quarter with Mercyhurst goals before
Amanda Bailey,
Victoria Gottorff, and Newton all scored for the Lakers in the second quarter as Mercyhurst took a 7-2 lead into the halftime break.
Boettcher and Stephens began the third quarter with a pair of man-up goals to extend the Laker lead to eight. Gannon then proceeded to score the final two tallies of the third quarter, both also on a man-up advantage.
The Golden Knights added the first score of the final quarter to bring them within five of the Lakers with 11:34 remaining in the game. Three fourth quarter goals from Hirst, Bailey, and Simms denied any comeback efforts from Gannon.
Mercyhurst finished the game outshooting Gannon 24-15. The Lakers caused 14 of the 18 Golden Knight Turnovers including four from Murphy. Lippert finished the contest with five stops in net for the green and white.
The Lakers will now prepare for their PSAC Quarterfinal match that they will host against IUP next Tuesday at Saxon Stadium.
