Johnstown, Pa.—The Mercyhurst softball team split a double header against UPJ. Bouncing back from a tough game one loss to get a decisive win in game two. Their record is now 19-10.
Game One, 4-3
Mercyhurst took a quick lead on a solo shot from
Cheyenne Hindman and would lead until the sixth when UPJ scored three. The Lakers made a quick comeback in the top of the seventh to tie the game but couldn't hang on to the lead as UPJ went on to score three in the bottom half of the seventh.
Mikaela Schramski started for the Lakers and went five innings with two strikeouts. Kaitlyn Hoffner came in in relief to pitch 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Game Two, 10-0 (F/5)
Mercyhurst's bats came to life in the second game of the day. The Lakers took a 4-0 lead in the second on
Kacie Irwin grand slam, the first home run of her career and the offense was off and running.
Mercyhurst plated three more in the top of the third when
Allison Dejidas drove one out to left center to make it 5-0. A
Kaci Alderson single drove in Marissa Cartellone and
Sarah Koscho to give the Lakers an 8-0 lead after three.
Irwin once again sparked another multi-run inning for the visitors in the fifth, a two-RBI single brought in Hoffner and
Jessica Clark. Irwin was brought in later in the inning Cheynne Hindman to make the advantage 10-0.
Hilty shut the door in the bottom half of the fifth to close out the game. She went all five innings for Mercyhurst allowing only two hits, while issuing no free passes in the game. Her record in the circle goes to 7-5.
The Lakers return action on Friday when they'll play two against California (Pa.) in Erie. First pitch is slated for 2:30 PM.
