Winter Haven, Fl.—The Lakers dropped their morning game to Cedarville 4-2 and were shutout in their midday game, 1-0, against West Virginia Wesleyan at The Spring Games on Monday.
Against Cedarville (L, 4-2)
The Yellow Jackets got to Mikaela Schramski early in the top of the second inning, with Adaline Ziehmer taking her deep to take a 1-0 lead with one out. She then got Lexi Parsons to strikeout swinging, but she reached after the pitch got away from catcher Madison Fry.
After striking out another batter for the second out, Schramski was nearly out of the inning as she induced a ground ball, but an error at first base meant the inning would continue with two on and two out. McKenna Smith then tripled home the pair and scored on a base hit by Mackenzie Russell to give Cedarville a 4-0 lead.
Schramski allowed another single before she was relieved by Kaitlin Hoffner. Schramski left having struck out four batters in 1.2 innings with four runs allowed (one earned). Hoffner would finish the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit without allowing another run.
The Lakers loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning with one out. Cheyenne Hindman hit a grounder to second and the Yellow Jackets tried to make the play at home, but an error by catcher Mariah Wallace allowed Chloe McQuestion to score.
Fry raced home on a passed ball with Allison Dejidas at the plate to make the score 4-2. Neither team would score again.
Against West Virginia Wesleyan (L, 1-0)
The Lakers lost a nail-biter to the Bobcats in heir second game of the day.
Both starting pitchers went the distance, with Mercyhurst's Morgan Hilty not allowing a hit until the bottom of the third inning. With one out, she allowed three straight singles to load the bases, and a sacrifice fly brought in the game's lone run. She escaped the inning and remained unscathed the rest of the way.
The Lakers struggled to string together more than one hit in an inning against Wesleyan's starter, Hannah Hudson, who improved to 3-0 with the win. The Mercyhurst bats started to get hot late in the game, but back-to-back singles were erased by a double play to end the top of the sixth.
In the seventh, Sarah Koscho notched the lone extra-base hit of the game with a one-out double, but she was stranded to end the game.
