LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team won a 16-9 contest on the road Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven University in a PSAC West matchup with the Bald Eagles. Victoria Gottorff paced the Lakers attack with five goals including a first quarter hat-trick while Kaitlyn Lippert made 10 saves in net for Mercyhurst.
The first quarter of action was controlled by Mercyhurst despite the opening goal being scored by the Bald Eagles. From there the Lakers offense would explode by scoring nine goals in just over 10 minutes of game time while the Laker defense did not give up another score in the opening quarter. Rachel Hirst got the Laker run started at the 10:23 mark, Victoria Gottorff followed with her two scores of the game coming just minutes apart. Then Julia Ruscio scored her first of two goals in the first quarter before Gottorff capped off a first period hat-trick. Maggie Newton, Marissa Comerate, and Molly Meegan capped off the Laker run giving the green and white a 9-1 lead entering the second.
The Bald Eagles did not back down as they went on a 5-1 scoring run of their own that lasted for the majority of the second quarter. The run was capped at the 4:26 mark when they cut the Laker deficit to four when the score was 10-6. The Lakers responded with three goals in the last three minutes of play in the half with another goal from Ruscio as well as two more scores from Gottorff. The scores would give Mercyhurst a 13-7 advantage at the halftime break.
The second half played out the complete opposite way as the first with the two teams combining to only score five goals in the games final 30 minutes, with no goals being recorded in the fourth quarter. Lock Haven scored first in the third to make it a 13-8 game before Meghan Nasman and Kiera Boettcher struck for the Lakers. The Bald Eagles would add a goal at the 4:13 mark before senior defender Mackenzie Murphy scored her second goal of the season with five seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Lakers will continue their stretch of PSAC West games next week when they host Edinboro at Saxon Stadium on Wednesday, the opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
