Jan Phyl Village, Fl.—The Mercyhurst Softball team split their final two spring break games in Florida against Stonehill College and The College of Staten Island Friday afternoon at the Auburndale Softball Complex in Jan Phyl Village.
Against Stonehill (L, 3-2)
Mercyhurst failed to capitalize on a Stonehill error in the top of the second inning, but the Skyhawks did not return the favor in the bottom half. May Dawes led off for Stonehill with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a passed ball. After a walk and lineout, Chloe Kelly drove in Dawes with an infield base hit.
Mercyhurst starter Morgan Hilty induced a ground ball to second, but a fielding error let the ball through and gave everyone an extra base, bringing home an unearned run. Hilty got another ground ball to end the inning with Stonehill ahead 2-0.
Brianne Egelston led off the fourth inning with a single to left, stole second and moved to third on a grounder. Sarah Koscho drove her home with her own single to left field for the Lakers' first run. In the bottom half, Kelly singled home another run to keep Stonehill ahead 3-1.
The Lakers were able to take advantage of an error in the seventh inning to come within one run, but could not close the gap. Hilty struck out three and walked one in her complete-game effort, falling to 3-3 on the season.
Against Staten Island (W, 7-3)
Mikaela Schramski delivered another complete-game win in game two as she improved to 5-2 with five strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.
After Schramski shut down the Dolphins in the first inning, her offense gave her a comfortable lead in the bottom half. Madison Fry reached on an error to start the inning, and Egelston singled and stole second base to put runners on second and third. They each picked up a base on a passed ball.
Allison Dejidas then doubled home Egelston and scored on a single by Marisa Cartellone to give Mercyhurst a 3-0 lead.
Schramski faced her first bit of danger in the third, when Staten Island pushed across a run before she stranded the bases loaded. Her offense rewarded her with three more runs in the fourth inning, with RBI coming from Dejidas. Cartellone and Kaci Alderson. Alderson drove in the seventh and final Mercyhurst run in the sixth inning as well.
The Dolphins tried to stage a seventh-inning rally, loading the bases with two outs. Anissa Acosta drove home two runs with a single up the middle, but Schramski induced an infield popup to end the game.
